This weekend, the 2nd annual Kpop Con USA is being held at the Miami Airport Convention Center (MACC). Unfortunately, I couldn’t get Sunday off from work so I was able to attend Friday and Saturday only. This fan account will be based on my day on Friday. I like to apologize in advance for the low quality pictures of the performances. Maybe one day I will care to invest on a camera but right now, I’m focusing on saving for my next trip xD
My friend and I arrived a little after one. I missed the opening ceremony but I was still excited. After showing our ticket, we received a wrist band, program book (see above), and a goodie bag. The regular ticket holders got green wrist bands and the VIP ticket holders got gold bands. I was surprised about the goodie bags because I read it came with the VIP tickets. I thought it was very nice of the staff. My bag contained a sticker of Exo’s Sehun, an “I love 2NE1” button, a glow stick and a Doong Doong fan.
We were told that the vendors and the main stage were in the main hall and the activities were in MACC 1 and MACC 2 upstairs. We decided to check out the merchandise first. There was a huge selection of albums, apparel, posters, stuffed toys and so much more. The glitter buttons were pretty so I bought a couple. My friend bought a hat. Everything was reasonable priced. I love you Kpoppin USA!
We went upstairs after shopping. In the hallway between MACC 1 and MACC 2 were several tables. Kpop Con USA was conducting a poll. The results will be announced today (Sunday). I hope they tweet it as well. GPK were setting up their table. GPK is a South Florida kpop dance group. I had no idea at the time that I was about to become a big fan. There was also a Dramafever table being set up. I’m already a premium member but I stopped by because it was my first time seeing anything DF related off the net lol.
Three kpop fan artists had their work on display. Shout out to Anna Lee, Bibiana Berardi, and Momojinxie. I am not exaggerating when I say I admired their work. You can not deny this takes real talent. I wish them luck in their future endeavors. If you or a friend come across this, please do not hesitate to contact me. I would like to post links to your sns.
After my friend I chatted for a few with fellow fangirls and fanboys, we realized it was almost time for the Music Core event. We went back downstairs and took our seats. The pictures you see here are just a few of the contestants. There were singers/rappers who performed with lyrics and without lyrics. If you were interested in performing or want to perform next year but worried about fluency, don’t be. We all enjoyed everyone’s performances.
There were some memorable performances however. One of the singers performed Got7’s I Like You. Safe to assume I am not the only one who loves that song lol. One guy did an impromptu rap from Epik High’s Born Hater after his performance with his guitar. The audience went wild.
My friend and I went to participate in our first activity of the day. K-Pop Confessions was being held in MACC 2. It was where you can talk/rant about anything and everything. People agreed on somethings and disagreed on others. The group continued to grow. It was very entertaining. I….think I will end it here lol. This blog is neutral zone. I will not go into details.
We decided to stay in the same room since Running Man was going to held there right after. I am a Running Man stan. This activity basically consisted of recreating some of the games we’ve seen on the show. First game was simple. Each team passed a ball down and one member would run up one by one. The second game was everyone had to remove their shoe and make a pile. The staff members mixed them up. Each team had a member go find their pair and put it on completely before the next member can go.
The next game was basically you fighting others to get in a picture lol. The last one is well known if you’re active in the kpop community. One person would use their mouth to pass an item to the next person. Idols play this in variety shows too, not just in Running Man. These games may sound “simple” or “childish” but when you’re letting go of your troubles at home and being with others who are just like you, you end up having a great time.
We decided to go visit the hotel’s Au Bon Pain for dinner before it closed for the night. While enjoying my turkey club sandwich and strawberry banana smoothie, we went through our pictures and talked about much we were having.
The next activity we attended was a movie screening. The Admiral: Roaring Currents is a Korean blockbuster that was released almost a year ago. I’ve heard about it in passing but I admit, I didn’t give it much thought. It was well received both nationally and internationally. I fell in love with it. I was so upset I couldn’t finish because I had to go downstairs for the concert. I definitely plan on watching it again.
I had been looking forward to the Special Guest Dream Concert from the moment it was posted on Facebook. I’m literally laughing as I think back about this. If you’ve ever been to a kpop concert, you know how CRAZY it is when the doors open. Everyone rushes in so they can good seats. Well, same exact thing happened Friday night…even though there was no idol lol. We all were excited about this event.
Aimee Lee Lucas was first. I fangirled during her performance. Her swag was on level 100. She was covered from head to toe but she was still sexy. A huge plus. I started hoping I would be able to see her again before I left for the night. She had a collaboration with NYX at the end then announced she was going to give away a ticket to Kcon NY and some apparel at her panel/dance workshop on Saturday. I didn’t win lol.
SAL-V and DIO came on the stage hyped. After watching Sal-V’s chat with JRE, I was looking forward to seeing them. They performed two songs including their English cover of G-Dragon and Taeyang’s I’m A Good Boy. DIO did these acrobatic dances on stage and the crowd loved it.
GPK was awesome. They performed a couple songs including Exo’s “Call Me Baby.” One member did a solo and she was fierce. I literally enjoyed watching them perform. I’m now a fan. I hope to see them again.
Coco Avenue performed to Mamamoo’s Aah Oop. I am a big fan of Mamamoo so when the track started playing, I smiled. I think it is safe to say this beautiful trio have no problem repping Girl Power. I came to this conclusion when they also sang “I’m A Good Girl” lol. They invited JRE on stage during their performance and we cracked up. If you click on the last picture, you’ll see DIO got up at one point and jammed along with the ladies.
I became a NYX fangirl that night.
NYX closed the show and they were perfect for it. I honestly don’t know what to say. They were AWESOME. Each member had a solo part and their moves blew me away. These girls are no joke. I plan on supporting them as much as I can from now on.
After the concert, my friend and I hung around for a while hoping to meet some of the performers. GPK already went their separate ways so we weren’t able to catch them. Aimee was sweet as ever! She took pictures with a lot of people and even took time to chat. NYX were beautiful inside and out. JRE and Mister Popo hung out backstage during the concert and came out for a bit after. What a great night!
My friend decided it was time for her to head home since she had to work early the next day. So I went to the next activity alone. Traveling for KPOP 101 was basically a “seminar”. Tips and advice were given, questions were asked, and even though I’ve traveled several times, I still learned something. Thanks guys! How does one take pictures at a rave?
Lol I will look that up later. Anyways, I went downstairs with my glow stick and went to the main hall for the K-Rave. People were shy at first but little by little, people gathered and had a great time. There was even a dance off. Someone took out his Big Bang and Topp Dogg lightsticks and put on a show. Everyone just had fun. No judgement. The convention didn’t end until midnight but I left a little after 11. I couldn’t wait to do it all over again on Saturday.
It is now 7:23 am, Sunday. Today is the last day. I wish everyone who is going a great time. Reliving Friday as I typed this made me realize just how much I enjoyed myself that day. Thank You Kpoppin USA and South Florida Kpop Fans Facebook group for making all this happen. I’m already looking forward to next year.
